All of these adorable knitted animals were made by either Ida Phira or Agnes Mukonya.
Ida is from Zimbabwe. She is 45. She’s been in South Africa for fifteen years. She is married with two children. She left Zim because of the situation there. “There is no life in Zim” she says. She came to South Africa to teach at nursery school, but it didn’t pay well. She has been knitting animals for a few years now and loves it. “I can now feed my kids and do whatever I want with my money,” she says.
Agnes is also from Zimbabwe. “I left Zim because of the hard life there,” she says. “I could not support my family.” She moved to South Africa specifically to follow the opportunity to hand knit animal toys. She lives with her husband and five children. Her husband is a builder. “I like South Africa,” she says. “There is a future here. The country has helped me with my life.”
