Communities

Poachers regularly penetrate vulnerable communities, seeking to inspire young teens to enter the life of being a poacher. Presenting as dashing individuals, with cars and big houses, they target the poorest members in very disenfranchised communities.

The poachers promise and deliver food, medical supplies, even transport to hospitals as needed. They present what looks like a quick route to money. Because these communities get no support from the government, poachers become “the good guys.” They start young teenagers out on poaching small game - antelope like impalas for example - slowly graduating them into the bigger animals, until they are ready to take on the prize: the rhino. The big question: How does one make the rhino more valuable alive than dead? How does one gain the trust and loyalty of the communities that surround the sanctuaries and The Kruger National Park? How does one turn the communities into partners in the fight to keep the rhino from extinction?

COMPLETE NETBALL KITS FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY
When you support young girls in a community, everything benefits! The young women love netball – a uniform, the right ball, a tog bag, and bib brings pride. Exercise keeps a person fit, well and happy. We aim to support the young women of the communities by augmenting their love of netball.

MANDELA VILLAGE COMMUNITY GARDEN

Working with the CFW Rhino Sanctuary, Baby Rhino Rescue provided funds to help in the development of the Sunrise Vegetable Garden. CFW staff tilled the fields, planted the seeds, and brought water in for irrigation. The gardens are maintained and harvested by members of the community. The community has been growing, consuming and selling green beans, carrots, tomatoes, butternut, spinach and corn. The garden project has improved food security and stimulates the local economy through job creation and skills development.

LOCAL COMMUNITY SOCCER TEAM

With the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, we have fully funded the soccer kits of “Team Rhino” and they have won their first game. We anticipate that as the “Rhino Teams” grow, a “Rhino Cup” is in the cards! These teams will be playing for the rhino.

CONSTRUCTION AND VEGETABLE SEEDS FOR ORGANIC VEGETABLE GARDEN

This garden is a prolific provider of beautiful vegetables, including cabbage, peppers, mielies, chillies, butternut, which are shared between the guards, the volunteers, and some VIP guests also. The long term idea is to grow enough vegetables so that they can also be sold at the Nelspruit market to raise extra funds for the sanctuary
