Our partner Dinokeng Game Reserve has experienced the unthinkable – 11 rhinos killed by poachers in the last six months. They reached out to us with an urgent request – the addition of ten trail cameras to supplement their anti-poaching system. These cameras are invaluable in the remote areas of the reserve. They are linked to an external control-room, and all “trips” are recorded for the APU to follow up on. More cameras means a faster response time in the event of an incursion and hopefully the apprehension of a potential poacher.
Dinokeng Game Reserve is close to Johannesburg and Pretoria and is the only Big 5 reserve in Gauteng Province. They host both black and white rhinos and came to us with an urgent need. Although they have a strong anti-poaching unit, they recently had a serious threat from poachers. After losing only three rhinos in 10 years, they lost three due to poaching in December 2025 with another three wounded but recovered after treatment. They have increased all possible actions and have had no more deaths so far this year. Baby Rhino Rescue has recently provided funding to add another security layer, a Matrice 4TD drone which is designed for more demanding environments and offers advanced features like a wide-angle camera lens and infrared thermal imaging.
The anti-poaching unit of the Dinokeng Game Reserve has been renting property from one of the landowners in the reserve. The property is used for office work and accomodation of the APU staff. Unofrtunately their lease is up and will not be renewed. To protect the area from poaching, the APU team needs a close place to stay and recharge after a long day or night in the field protecting the animals in the reserve. Baby Rhino Rescue is funding the purchase of two container homes to use as housing and office space. We are proud to support the efforts of the APU team as they do patrols, snare sweeps and general protective duties.
Baby Rhino Rescue and Wildlife Protection Solutions have collaborated again to send ten motion sensor cameras and five solar panels to our partner, Dinokeng Game Reserve. These real-time cameras relay information to wpsWatch, a system that monitors activity 24/7. When wpsWatch detects wildlife threats, it sends emails or SMS alerts (along with the coordinates of the intrusion) to security and monitoring staff, prompting an immediate response to active intrusions and illegal activities.
When our partner Dinokeng came to us with a need for their Anti-Poaching Unit, we stepped up. They asked for additional cell phones for their rangers plus batteries and chargers for the motion-sensor cameras they have installed on the property. These additions will help with monitoring and detecting poaching activites within the reserve, and will go a long way in keeping the rhinos safe on this unique and important property.
We are very pleased to announce our new partnership with Dinokeng Game Reserve. This is a unique reserve formed by combining state owned property and privately owned plots to form the DGR. At ten years old, it has the potential to become a model for future conservation where people and wild animals live in harmony. And it is on the way to prove itself as an example for successful transformation with so far more than 800 permanent jobs created for people living in the adjoining communities. The DGR is a Big Five game reserve and hosts both white and black rhino populations. To protect these rhinos they have an anti-poaching team that consists of rangers, dogs and dog handlers. With the increase in poaching, they approached Baby Rhino Rescue for help with additional technologies to monitor and detect illegal poaching activities within the reserve.
