Baby Rhino Rescue has embarked on a partnership with top intelligence operatives to keep South Africa's rhinos safe.

Our primary focus remains on security and to that end we have partnered with a company comprised of top intelligence professionals who are now engaged exclusively on wildlife conservation. They are using all their savvy acquired from a career in governmental intelligence to help keep our rhinos safe, and Baby Rhino Rescue is there, funding the necessary equipment and manpower.

SECURITY SYSTEMS IN PLACE

The nationwide security system that we began funding last year is in its final stages of implementation. Poaching continues across the country and we are determined to fight it at everu turn. This is a huge accomplishment that will benefit not only rhinos, but any wildlife that is under poaching pressure. We are greatly appreciative of our donors who have funded this entire project.

APPREHENDING POACHERS

Baby Rhino Rescue has been working with a key partner – comprised of top intelligence operatives – who are now working exclusively for wildlife and using all their savvy acquired from a career in governmental intelligence. This work is part of the nationwide security system that we have been involved with all year. With luck it will be completed by the end of 2023 and we will have yet another way to find and apprehend poachers.

KEEPING MORE RHINOS SAFE

As the poaching crisis continues, we are committed to supporting all of our partners as they fight for the survival of their rhinos. Additional strategic security measures, covering a large area in the Khamab Game Reserve and the surrounding area, were added. All alerts trigger the anti-poaching teams as well as South African law enforcement.  Our security to date has been responsible for apprehending two poaching gangs that were operational in the north and south of the reserve.  These poachers are currently behind bars and awaiting trial.

COUNTRYWIDE SECURITY SURVEILLANCE

BRR is funding a strategic security system in this area of the country. This will secure four private rhino properties and a provincial game reserve in the region. It will also provide essential security data for intelligence working to keep wildlife safe across the whole of South Africa. The first security point will be at a strategic juncture, sending information to anti-poaching units and law enforcement in the area.

ESSENTIAL UPGRADING OF KEY SECURITY POINTS

Baby Rhino Rescue is funding the next level of security systems for our game reserve in the Waterberg region. This is significant because as we make this particular property safe, we make the entire area safe. This is a key area for white and black rhinos in South Africa and therefore the world. The security consists of “points” in different strategic areas that relay essential security information to the anti-poaching units and law enforcement in the area. These security points are very effective and have been responsible for the information leading to the arrest of two poachers who, with their teams, have poached many rhinos.

ANTI-POACHING SUPPORT

When poaching was seen practically on Khamab Game Reserve’s doorstep, we stepped in! We provided funding for the entire year of 2022. This includes guard salaries, uniforms, rations, fuel for vehicles, equipment, and more. We aim to keep the 100-plus rhinos here, and all of the other animals, safe!

A SMASHING SUCCESS FOR RHINO SAFETY!

With 400,000 hectares, The Waterberg is South Africa’s biggest wildlife area outside of Kruger National Park. What makes it so vital is that with 2,000 or more rhinos, it is the biggest concentration of rhinos in the country now. The area is circled by layers of security and no rhinos are being poached! BRR Founder Helena Kriel and SA director Karina Suter attended the Save the Waterberg Rhino gathering in March 2022 and learned that one remaining area in the Waterberg is not protected, and this area makes the entire region vulnerable. Our mission was clear — raise money to protect this area! BRR reached out to our friends Conserv Earth and the two organizations planned a splashy golf day to make this happen. Six months later we held our Golf Day in September for World Rhino Day and R500,000 was raised. That’s more than $27,000! These funds will be used to purchase smart security systems for vulnerable areas.
