Radio System Upgrade April 2026
Sustainability is a focus and the wilderness operates off grid. While this wilderness is not Big Five, it has a multitude of diversity, including pangolin, leopard, many antelope and plain’s game and of course rhinos. The risk of poaching is always present and the wilderness needs an active anti- poaching unit.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS

Baby Rhino Rescue has funded an upgrade to the radio system of our partner in the Northern Limpopo region. The newer, multi-protocol radio systems cater to both analog and digital use, and will make a huge difference for communicating with their anti-poaching unit. Clear communication in critical circumstances will allow them to more effectively manage the reserve and the anti-poaching efforts. The new radio systems are capable of being tracked and will afford the opportunity to locate all team members in case of an emergency. In addition, a repeater keeps signals strong and ensures that the reserve team will be able to communicate, respond to emergencies, track poachers and set up effective ambushes.

SUSTENANCE FOR AN ORPHAN

A rare poaching of a female rhino occured at our partner reserve in the Northern Limpopo area. A young calf was orphaned, and was relocated to a sanctuary for safekeeping. Baby Rhino Rescue immediately funded emergency milk and supplemental food to feed the young calf for a year.

NEW GATE FOR MORE PROTECTION

Baby Rhino Rescue has funded the installation of a new mechanical gate at the main entrance to a private game reserve that we work with. The gate is also enhanced with a solar-powered video camera which records all movement through the day. The video camera is connected to a monitor inside the property, so all comings and goings are closely watched and the integrity of the gate can be ensured. This donation was “a game changer” for the property, and it’s all because of you, our dedicated donors!

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

We funded the work of a traditional healer – a sangoma – at a special private game reserve. Typically, poachers meet with sangomas before they leave to poach, participating in rituals that bring luck and provide protection. Our goal is to protect rhinos using traditional medicines and applying them in areas where the poachers are active. When news travels within local communities that a sangoma has been active, the poachers will almost certainly not want to enter that area.
