The orphaned rhinos at Solio Rhino Orphanage rely on their carers for food, safety, health and love. The carers are dedicated individuals who provide round-the-clock care to these vulnerable animals. Due to the intensive nature of rhino orphan care, particularly night feeding, medical monitoring, and rapid response to emergencies, having carers who live on-site and close to the orphanage is essential. Baby Rhino Rescue has funded the construction of three houses, to ensure carers are readily available, well rested, and able to maintain consistent high-quality standards of care.
Our partner in Kenya, Solio Rhino Orphanage, now has eight orphaned rhinos that need care and attention. Through a very generous donation by our wonderful friends Rob and Shellan Isackson, we will be funding all the milk for the young rhinos here – for the entire year. Baby rhinos love their milk and the carers at Solio love their rhinos. After a nice meal, Maisha celebrates with a delighful mud bath. We are extremely grateful for the Isakson’s continued support!
Now with seven young rhinos to feed, our partner Solio Game Reserve was in dire need of support for additional milk. Baby Rhino Rescue stepped up and donated enough money for them to purchase 6 months worth of milk for the two youngest, Malaika and Mwitu. They are seen here grazing in the larger area where they can roam, but always with carers by their sides.
Our long-time donor, Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation, has stepped up again to fund a month of milk for Nyota, an orphan at our partner Solio Rhino Orphanage. This milk will not only give her all the nutrients she needs, but will provide deep satisfaction and well being. Baby rhinos love their bottle more than anything else and Baby Rhino Rescue is extremely grateful for the continued support of Wags and Menace.
Our amazing donor, Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation, has funded two months worth of milk for the four orphaned rhinos at our newest partner, Solio Game Reserve. This milk is critical to their ongoing rehabilitation and we are truly blessed to have such a dedicated donor, who really does make a difference.
As we begin our tenth year working to save the rhino from extinction, we find ourselves circling back to our roots: helping to support orphaned baby rhinos. Our newest partner, Solio Game Reserve, needed additional stables to house their growing orphanage. We provided the funding to construct three new pens; this will significantly enhance their capacity to provide a safe haven for more orphans, ensuring they receive the love, care, and warmth essential for their recovery and growth.
A rhino calf was separated from her mother and ended up in a river on the property of our newest partner, Solio Game Reserve in Kenya. Luckily she was found as she would have drowned if the team didn’t save her. It took two hours to get her out of the river, up a steep embankment and into a truck. She was covered with blankets to keep her warm during the trip to the sanctuary. Baby Rhino Rescue happened to be present at this rescue and witnessed the immense love the staff has for rhinos. Coincidentally, the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation had just sent us funds designated specifically for milk, so we promptly wired it to Solio to support litte Maisha.
In 2023, a baby white rhino was found alone on Solio Game Reserve’s property. She became the first resident of Solio’s new orphanage, marking a new chapter in rhino care and rehabilitation. In 2024, Solio approached us for help. BRR founder Helena Kriel, and project director Karina Suter flew to Solio to meet with the Managing Director Kevin Carr-Hartley. After a deep immersion into this extraordinary place, we were passionate to partner with the reserve and orphanage. We kicked off this partnership by funding a full-time veterinarian to care for the rescued baby rhinos and any other animal on the reserve and in the sanctuary that needs medical intervention. The vet will also be taking care of animals in the greater environs, so our funding goes far!
